                                           MAIDUGURI

Situated in the north-eastern part of Nigeria, Maiduguri is a beautiful city with impressive and broad streets adorned with trees. The city’s heritage has its roots in the grandeur of the famous Kanem-Borno Empire.

Borno State, in which the city is located, shares common borders with Republic of Niger, Chad and Cameroon. It is, therefore, a prominent gateway to North and Central Africa.

The city is linked by air, road and rail to other parts of the country and has the added advantage of the the location of an international airport. With an economy largely dominated by agriculture and livestock farming, Maiduguri is ideal for appreciating the culture of the Kanuri and Shuwa Arab people. The state is, therefore, rich in millet, rice, cassava, date palm, fruits, vegetable, sorghum, wheat, groundnuts, gum Arabic, sweet potatoes and sugar cane.

Tourist attractions include the Shehu of Borno`s palace and Kyarimi Park, a forty-two acre zoological garden for public leisure and lake Chad, which is considered one of Africa’s largest lakes, providing a recreational and fishing resort for tourists. Other attractions include the colorful Durbar, usually held to celebrate Muslim festivals. The Menwara festival, which serves as the avenue for initiating men and also to select marriage partners, is a delight to watch. The city has a rich dance and music tradition.

The major culineries of the city are Tuwon Shinkafa, Tuwon Masara, Kunu, Fura da Nono, Miyan Kuka, Burabusko etc.
